Avatar! Yes I'm gonna give my personal take on the movie haha.
If I have to sum the film up in one word, it would be "epic"! James Cameron, of Titanic fame, brings us this visual masterpiece that is Avatar. The filming required such sophisticated technology that when James Cameron conceived the idea for this film years back, he found that the technology then simply couldn't handle what he had in mind, and therefore he set out to create this technology, with help from the best minds in the business. It's no wonder that the film cost a whopping $300 million (or thereabouts) in production costs. And the production costs are justified when you see the film's sheer beauty. Pandora's lush environments are richly textured, and every scene from the lush greenery of the jungles to the majestic floating mountains are breathtakingly beautiful. The avatars are richly animated, and while I don't want to go into lengths about the technologies employed by Cameron the use of special cameras to capture the actors' facial expressions and body language and the subsequent use of unique technology to translate these into the computer-generated imagery made the experience much more immersive; the avatars didn't feel like computer-generated images when viewed alongside actual human actors, they looked as real as the humans! The rather life-like avatars So much about the technology and graphics, but it's understandable - the excellent graphics is what defines this film. The story is decent, if not pretty predictable. Won't go into details about the plot since some might not have watched the movie yet (: In any case, I guess Cameron was never a great writer in the first place, though he is competent enough to deliver a plot that works. There are several cliches and stereotypes in the film. I found many parts of the film that reminded me of other films, games or novels. The way they link up to their avatars reminded me of the Matrix. The AMP (Amplified Mobility Platform) suits remind me of the mech-like machines of Matrix: Revolutions. The taming of the various animals native to Pandora reminded me of Rappelz. Which, by the way, reminds me: it's pretty hilarious how the Na'vi can establish that link with practically every specimen of the planet's flora and fauna. It's as though every living thing on Pandora has a USB port of their own! The feel of the movie as well as the theme of a civilisation going up against another more technologically advanced race reminds me of Halo. The battles remind me of the Lord of the Rings in many aspects, from Tsu'Tey's actions to the last parts (which reminded me of how the Ents saved the day in LOTR2 haha). One of the battle scenes, which were all pretty epic! So all in all, how was the story? The theme of evil and greedy human beings exploiting the environment (though not our dear planet Earth's environment) might make some people roll their eyes, but overall the storytelling is brisk and the story events that transpire moves the film along quite nicely with few dull moments. ![]() Jake Sully flies into battle To wrap up, Avatar might suffer from a predictable and unspectacular plot, but the story is by no means terrible even if it isn't fantastic. Besides, the outstanding visuals more than make up for any shortcomings that the film has, because you'll be so enthralled by the cinematography that you'll gloss over the minor grouches that you might have with the film's other aspects. The film certainly is an exhilarating journey and even at 161 minutes, the film is paced fast enough and filled with enough action to sustain your interest throughout, with probably only your bladder disagreeing. Certainly a must-watch! << Home |
