Was having a conversation with a friend about music, songs and their lyrics today, and I've arrived at the conclusion that I'm just a guy who loves and digs his music =p

Quite often I find out lyrics to songs, and make my own interpretations about the song lyrics, especially if the meaning isn't particularly obvious. Jason Mraz's use of metaphors and wordplay means that I can only give my best guess at what the lyrics really mean to him, but I make my own conjectures anyway and think of what the song means to me. I also love listening to Japanese music, in addition to some Korean music. And even though I do not have the translated lyrics for all the songs that I listen to, it's kinda amazing how the songs can still evoke certain emotions in me, simply with their melodies.

If you find that I'm slightly mental at this moment, you aren't someone who loves and digs your music =p
If, however, my words strike a chord (lol no pun intended) with you, feel free to read on.

I also tend to associate certain songs with certain events in my life. Usually it just corresponds to the songs I was listening to very often back when that event was happening. Just to illustrate, I'll set my winamp to random (er, actually it has always been on random) and then I'll talk about the next five songs that mean something significant to me. I'm going to omit those songs that don't particularly mean anything to me.

1) Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
How apt for the first song to be my favourite song! It's the song from which I got my current MSN nick, which actually means something to me. 2008 had its ups and downs for me, but the start of the second half of the year I was kinda troubled, and I always listen to this song back then to cheer me up. The verse I extracted from the song to put as my MSN nick is how I remind myself that no matter what happens, no matter how my breath fogs up the glass I'm looking into, I should always erase my worries and start anew.

2) Bie the Star - Jung Wha Jua Jai
This song sounds really hip ;o
This is actually a Thai song. I grew to like Thai music after my overseas summary exercise at Thailand last year, and checked out some of the songs on the Thai Music Charts when I came back. This was one of my finds, and it's my favourite of the lot for its catchy tune. It sounds like something you would hear on AuditionSEA, and it actually sounds rather like KPop too =p
In any case, this song evokes memories of everything that happened during my Thailand trip, which is arguably the highlight of my two years of National Service.

3) Gani Karim, Lily Anna Rahmat, Sebastian Tan, Asha Edmund - Five Stars Arising
Yes, it's a NDP song. This version was sung by the above artists for NDP 2007, another huge event of my two years of National Service. This song, for some reason, stuck the best in my head, alongside the main theme song for NDP 2007, Will You. So this song reminds me of the great time I had in my involvement with NDP 2007.
Oh, and I'll never forget Staff Sergeant Edwin singing this song! =p

4) Yellowcard - How I Go
This song makes me feel really, really emo. I was listening to it quite often in the period just after my A's, and it coincided with my worries about life after A's, and National Service. I still listen to this song whenever I'm feeling down. The lyrics are also beautiful (:

You keep the air in my lungs
Flowing along as the melody comes
My heart beats like timpani drums
Keeping the time while the symphony strums

5) McFly - Smile
Haha. Well I don't want to explain in detail for some reason. But anyway this song is rather motivational to me, and cheers me up easily. Just to remember to smile, smile and smile, because it'll make things so much better when you're feeling loved (:

That's it then. I hope you've gained some insight into my music tastes. Now excuse me as I go humming along to the tunes of Smile ;p

Comments:
There's something about "I'm Yours" that I really appreciate, and it's getting harder and harder to find in a lot of today's music. It's Mraz's ability to string together a sentence in a song in such a way that the intonations synchronise with the beat, and the rhyming words aren't mispronounced for the sake of rhyming. The end result is something catchy and upbeat.

Also, I've been looking for the album version, but haven't been successful in finding it :(
