Friday was Alpha's company outing to West Coast Recreation Centre, where we had two games of bowling (plus one match pitting each platoon's best against one another) and buffet lunch. It was also William's ORD day, incidentally. Anyway, I went for the outing with Daniel and John. It was nice seeing everyone again, and it seems tummies have been growing, what with the lack of training and probably the large amount of chaokeng-ness =p
Today I woke up pretty late. Probably the first time I've ever woken up this late. Well, fine, 11pm probably isn't very late for a Sunday, but I'm a pretty light sleeper, so even on Sundays I usually get woken up by mum's cleaning, the rustling sound from my dad flipping the papers, or the incredibly annoying karang guni horn. It's good being a light sleeper though, as compared to, say, Chee Yong, who can fall asleep in every imaginable position, and also several unimaginable positions. You might point out that I've fallen asleep while standing before (actually, you won't, because this has been a well-guarded secret of mine, until now that is), but it was due to extreme fatigue that I fell asleep while camouflaging our 5-tonner during an outfield Exercise. But anyway, back to my point that being a light sleeper has its advantages. For one, it's not easy for instructors to stun your belongings, especially your rifle, during training exercises. Oh, stun means to steal, or secretly take something. I wonder how the term came about though. Maybe it's because those poor recruits and trainees always gets pretty stunned to find their weapon missing. I remember shellscrape day during my BMT field camp, where we slept in holes-in-the-ground aka shellscrapes for the first time in our lives. My PC and several other unknown commanders came by to try to steal our rifles, but I would "Oei!" them when they shine their torch in my shellscrape, which caught them by surprise each time. Another thing is that you are unlikely to bother people around you when you have to wake up earlier than them. My handphone's alarm tone is a pleasant melody, not a shrill alarm that assaults your inner ear, but it still manages to wake me up. It therefore doesn't disturb my family when I have to wake up early. Good for bunk use as well. There are some people who like to set incredibly loud alarms, and yet can sleep through an earthquake. Now imagine waking up the entire bunk and yet you, the person who set that alarm clock, are the last to wake up. That's sure to incur the ire of the entire bunk. So, being a light sleeper is good.
