Ah, two weeks since my last update. What a difference two weeks make. Just a week of doing stores separated the time I was shivering in the rain in the western part of Singapore two weeks ago and now, when I'm pretty much rotting at home for close to every day, indulging in Football Manager on the PC and games like Mario Kart and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings on the Nintendo DS. Other times, I'm perusing the articles of Magic the Gathering Online, formulating deck ideas. Yeah, incredibly no life.

Warning: this entry is about to get much more no-life

Speaking of Magic, which remains the only card game I've played to date in my nineteen (hint hint) years of existence. Sure, Trading Card Games (TCGs) like Pokemon were rather popular once, as were WWE cards, just to name a few, but I kinda stuck to Magic. I think I first started playing it in the period after PSLE, when there wasn't anything to do. Some of my classmates then had the cards and I leeched cards from them to form my own decks to play against them. Then Secondary School came and the cards were banished to a dark corner of my cupboard, until the after Os period where there was once again nothing much to do. This time around Zuo Yi and co revived my interest in the TCG heh. Then I stopped playing once again, and (no, I did not start playing after As, despite the pattern suggesting so) once again my interest was re-ignited by the small stash of cards in a dis-owned cupboard in a certain bunk in Jurong Camp. The surprising fact that several of my men and fellow specs once played the TCG (and some still play it till now) meant that we all easily reverted back to the TCG players that we all once were. Supporting our decision to play the cards was the fact that in-camp entertainment options were severely limited.

Now why Magic and not Pokemon or any other TCG then? Magic has always had a rich storyline, with most if not all cards linked to the story. This is done so through the little italicized sentences below the rules text for each card; text known as flavour text. Some flavour text really tickle me. Like that on a card called Pravh, which is the guild hall of the people from the Azorius guild. The Azorius cards are known for the ability to control and limit your opponents, so that they can't do anything while you slowly build up your arsenal. And the flavour text for the card?

Pravh, where much work is done to make sure nothing is accomplished.

And that of Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind (erm, an ultra intelligent Dragon Wizard) is a super-complicated equation which only the great Dragon Wizard himself can understand.

Or is it?

(Z–>)90º – (E–N²W)90ºt = 1

What does that mean? It doesn't look like any existing mathematical formula, so is it just gibberish, gobbledygook, balderdash, jabberwocky or rigmarole? Hmmm...

First, take the N² and make it NN.

(Z->)90º - (E-NNW)90ºt = 1

Then, turn (Z->) and (E-NNW) 90 degrees clockwise, giving

N
I
V

-

M
I
Z
Z
E
t

=

1

Ah.

Oh and I also like Magic for the great card art. Here's a wallpaper featuring Niv-Mizzet.

Anyway, that should be enough nerdy ramblings and geeky sayings to saturate this entry. I promise the next one would be back to normal ;o
